How it works

The US Navy method estimates body fat from your height and your neck and waist (plus hips for women). It is surprisingly close to lab methods when you measure carefully: use a soft tape, stand relaxed and measure first thing in the morning.

Frequently asked questions

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

For general health, roughly 10–20% for men and 20–30% for women. Athletes are often lower.

Where do I measure my waist?

Men: at the navel. Women: at the narrowest point of the waist. Keep the tape level and don’t pull it tight.

How accurate is the tape method?

Typically within 3–4% of lab tests when measured consistently — great for tracking change over time.
